Mulching Shallots
« on: March 19, 2016, 09:06 »
Morning all,

I sowed my shallot sets last week where to save time netting from the birds and future weeding as I am limited with time I decided to mulch them with seaweed. I have done some reading around and mulching onions can cause rot to the bulb but I have not found any advice on mulching shallots that is helpful. Any advice or past experiences with this?

On a side note; my garlic was mulched with seaweed back in November when sowed and they are doing well. However this is tried and tested practice.

Good morning.
I could be wrong but as shallots grow on the surface i would think they need air around them.

Yes, I agree.

If you are going to mulch, then keep the dressing away from the actual bulbs a bit as they don't like being buried completely
