Leeks germination
« on: March 15, 2016, 08:49 »
Hi,

I have used the leeks in a litter tray method for the last 3 years with success but this year the germination has puzzled me.  They were put on the usual windowsill (above a radiator) but only the row of seeds at 1 end of the litter tray have germinated.  The rest of the tray has 1 or 2 showing through.  They were sown on 20th February.

Any thoughts?

Weird. Were they all the same type of leek?

The reason I ask is because I have two sorts in one tray : Jolant popped up like mustard and cress, while Autumn Mammoth struggled through after about three weeks.

There is still time for the others of yours to appear from an 20th Feb sowing I reckon

It was actually two trays.  One tray had Musselburgh and the other Blue Solaise.  Both did the same thing, germination on 1 edge.

Things have improved so I still have hope that I might get a full tray.  It just proves no method is foolproof!

Thanks for the reply.

Have you tried rotating the trays, it may be there is a draft, chilling one end of the trays.

Leeks usually get there, but like all alliums, they take their time! Fear ye not!

Mine are hopelessly late, but so what, we need them for November onwards, not the summer!
