what to seal the joint of grafted fruit tree with?
« on: March 13, 2016, 13:15 »
hi all.

i've decided to have a dabble with grafting this year, never tried it before.

i'm probably going to cleft or bark graft. what is best to use to seal the joint? would general purpose silicone sealer do, or will the chemicals not be good for the tree?

I bought a grafted tree recently and it looked like they had used cling film.

There used to be a product called grafting wax, for sealing the joint. Probably that is still available at garden centres.
We come from the earth, we return to the earth, and in between we garden.

I have some grafting tape, and a pot of medo pruning compound The source of my scion wood uses freezer bags cut into strips, wound round and tied - more cheaper  ::)

I'm using grafting tape and Tenax Wax to seal the ends.
.
As Lardman commented, freezer bags are a suggested 'poor mans substitute'.

I have read old books where they suggested using 'yellow clay'.

thanks for the replies. i think i'll try cling film / freezer bags for now, just to see how i get on with it to be honest. i don't wanna spend money on things i may not use again if i don't get on with grafting.

how long roughly does the joint need sealing / protecting for?

........... i think i'll try cling film / freezer bags for now, ............

Although I'm sure it will work, I think cling film is not recommended as it does not allow any gas exchange.

grafting wax and tape are not expensive. I got mine off ebay. I've always believed that if a job is worth doing, it's worth doing right. If you use dodgy materials and the graft doesn't take you won't know why.

Grafting tape - a flexible waxed type tape. Around a tenner a roll which may seem expensive but it will do a lot of grafting projects (if you don't lose it ) Just leave it on, by the end of the season it will start to come off of its own accord  :)
