Onion sets from Lidl
« on: March 08, 2016, 21:16 »
Saw good sized net bags of onion sets in Lidl at 69p. Cheap as chips. But the sets are individually very, very small. Do small sets necessarily mean small onions?

Last years sets from the lottie shop were very small, but they grew to a nice size so i can use them one at a time in the kitchen... plus i got loads of onions. This year they are a lot bigger so, as we buy them by weight, i will do not have as many.

For 69p, even if you get a crop of smaller sized onions, I would say you still got a good buy  ;)

Feed them well once they go in and you may be surprised.  Watering if we get a dry spell helps a lot as well.  I must admit I never have the time to water onions, but some of my plot neighbours do water and it does seem to help the onions swell up a bit more  :)

small onion sets usually produce large onions, whilst you need large garlic cloves to produce decent sized bulbs
Do you really need al that lettuce/

I'd say it depends on variety, climate and growing medium. Not the original size as bought.

I bought a bag of yellow and a bag of red!  There's far too many in each bag for me (I don't have the space).  But if I remember in the many until they harvest I'll let you know how they get on.

I like small onions anyhow a I usually cook for one :)

.

With me the reds are inclined to bolt, even the heat treated ones,so I have given up growing them!

Don't get rid of all your spares too quickly. I find a few sets usually vanish (birds or worms?) before sprouting, so replacements are handy.

At this stage the 75 x mini-sets I planted are looking very good.

Some people think that smaller sets are better as they are less likely to bolt, I think prevailing conditions cause onions to bolt rather than the size of the set.  Just enjoy the crop and your experience will guide you next year
