Planting potatoes in an area with rabbits and deer
« on: March 05, 2016, 21:26 »
I am planning on planting potatoes in an area with rabbits and deer, does anybody know if they will be eaten? ( I planted one tuber last year and it wasn't eaten, but it was only one plant). Thanks

I do not think deer or rabbits graze potatoes. Rabbits may dig scratchings and expose the potatoes so that they green.

I have never seen rabbit or deer damage on potato fields so i think you will be safe from them.
Blight is enough to worry about !

No rabbits but we do have deer (muntjac and the bigger ones) living in the cemetary next door and wandering onto our plots.  Sweetcorn, courgettes, pumpkins, squashes, french beans and chard get decimated unless netted, but the spuds are completely ignored.

In North Lincs deer decimate potato fields. I've worked on a potato harvester and we've left a third of a field-a few acres, on a few occasions as the deer have taken all worthwhile tubers. They dig them up take a bite and move on to the next plant.

.

Rabbits certainly are a menace in our allotments, they dig into the side of the riggs and eat the "seed" potatoes when first planted!

They do not bother so much once they have started to grow!

I have a Jack Russel who knows his stuff, he goes up and down the riggs under the potato foliage and as the rabbits sit on till the last moment he can do his stuff!
STOP, and smell the roses!

Sounds more like boar than deer if they have eaten a couple of acres of taters, deer are not great diggers !

Its deer, We watch them from one field to another. There's no boar round these parts yet.
