PBS Stripped (updated)
« on: February 29, 2016, 15:38 »
Not a lot anyone can do but think it may help to vent!!

So went over the patch to start some digging ready for the new season....I was also excited to check on my PSB which I was most proud of having never grown it before. It was doing really well, even the neighbours had commented that they had struggled with it due to pests....

So you can imaging my horror when i see that the netting had come away and all of the plants had been stripped. I asssume by pigeons.

There are a few lower leaves left but they are all in a bit oif a state . Should i wait to see if i get an spears or just call it a day??

the pigeons seem to eat the tops of mine at this time of year, but leave the spears alone.

i'm sure i read somewhere a while back that you can encourage spear growth by removing the vegetation, i guess so they can put all their energy into the spears.

have you any pictures to see whats left?

How disappointing. You have to wait so long for the spears to grow and then they are gone like that! Pigeons have a lot to answer for round here too.

The plants might well throw up some more though, so don't give up quite yet

There seem to be little purble shoots om the stem where the leaves have been broken. Dont think they were quite as purple last week either. Do you think they will shoot!?

Don't worry - looks from your pics like the plants are still going to produce spears. In about a week or two by the looks of it...

Just keep that netting secure!

PS well done!

The main heads will develop first. Take 'em off when they reach a size you want - mine get to between golf ball and tennis ball size. Once you take those off the side shoots will grow more strongly. And take them whenever you want them - at a certain point in spring that I've never managed to judge, the spear stalks get more stringy.

look the same as mine. the pigeons may have done you a favour by removing the green so the plants can put more energy into the spears.
