Blueberries - rainwater - critters!
« on: February 23, 2016, 14:26 »
Hi guys I bought 2 blueberry bushes the other day from pound land and have been out and bought the right compost for them but ......

They need to be watered with rainwater and soaked for an hour before planting (I'm assing in rainwater). Now the only rainwater I have is what's collected in my dogs paddling pool over the winter and it's full of those swimming critters I'm assuming larvae of some kind? Will it be ok to use or should I put a bucket out and try and collect some fresh stuff?

Does all rainwater end up with those critters?

Many thanks

Hi, it's fine to use that, the squiggly things are mosquito or midge larvae, they will die when in the soil.

as said the rainwater will be fine, made me smile that you only have a small amount you have to use, over here we've had at least a metre of it. the only thing I would watch for is all the blueberries I have bought in bargain shops have turned out to mountain wimberries or winberries or blaeberries depending on local dialect. I bought some in Aldi in the summer and they are proper blueberry plants, the others I have are imposters, sold cheap by very unscrupulous suppliers. keep an eye on them, you may be lucky

you will prob need to find some way of collecting and storing rain water for the summer as they shouldn't be watered with tap water.
