leaving unpacked raspberry canes in shed
« on: January 01, 2016, 19:14 »
got delivered 12 joan j from kinda a month a go, and  left them in allotment shed since then. and with the thought of heal them to soil before make the patch ready and actal planting..I opened  the pack. but thinking I might harm the roots while replant, dropped the idea and loosely pack them again and left in shed again.

The patch is almost ready (still some couch roots to get rid of here and there) but can plant them in a week time.

I want to plant them in 2 rows from one edge to centre of the plot width. can any one suggest me planting instructions.

Give the roots a soak (for an hour or so) before you plant them (I hope they haven't dried out so much that they're already dead  )

Give the hole a dusting of Bonemeal before putting the canes in and refilling.  Autumn varieties are planted 16/18 ins apart in the row, with about 6ft between the rows. Prune the tops down to a couple inches after planting.

New growth should grow from the roots in Spring.

That is great info MS, the roots look good, and tied tem back to the pack leaving the twigs out. shall I use horse menure while planting? I have added plenty compost and soil conditioner compost though so far.

As long as it is well rotted, some manure would make a good surface mulch.
