First year growing from seed this year.
I see lots of people sown theirs already but I only have an unheated greenhouse to grow mine. Am I bound to fail if I sow now? I'm not growing for exhibition just to eat

I didn't have a greenhouse last year and held off till late Feb. I've still got about 11 nice fat onions left.

Really excited the first little seedlings have popped their heads through!!  Only 4 out of nearly 300 but it is the first sign of growth this year.

Oooooh New Shoot, even Mr Sunny is a tad envious. He knows ours were sown three days after yours so is now expecting signs of life by Wednesday or Thursday

And there they are ... tiny little white elbows of Spring onions. No sign of the big boys yet but plenty of time. Sorry I can't post a pic yet but I have lost my camera cable. New one should arrive on Friday

Mine too! Back from up North to find 2 trays are well up -  Sturon and Spring onions, Shimonita,  but Ailsa Craig are a mere occasional white something as yet.  All sown on 2nd January.

Our Japanese onions are under cloches, and as of today, their clumps seem to be the same as they were when I popped them in a few days ago.

As always, they have two chances!

They do look a little vulnerable though...

They do need to put on some new root growth first GRowster, so don't worry yet!

There were four tiny Bedfordshire Champs up this evening (sown on 28th Dec) so very happy

Thank you Sunny!

Years ago, we used to grow those huge Marshalls onions, and back then, we'd use the whole lot, but these days, as there's just the two of us, we only need smaller veg, so the clump-growing method should fit the bill!

Anyway, they've got good-hearted beds to grow in, and I'll talk to them occasionally as well...

Bought a couple of cheap kitchen sink bowls at Aldi this morning and drilled drainage holes.

Sowed Bedfordshire Champion and Red Baron. Tucked up nice and warm in the spare room.

ooooh! I meant 28th December!!!  There are 16 today, out of 20.

I read something very helpful by Medwyn Williams yesterday: he has found that seedlings re-establish after transplanting, if they are moved at the two true leaf stage. He moves his into modules 2.5cm square by 5cm deep -- mine were sown individually into these to start with -- with a 1cm deep layer of compost in the tray the modules stand in, to feed any roots that grow out of the bottom. From there they go into 9cm pots.

I shall be following his advice and keeping them well fed, although not the bit where he is giving them 12 hours of light a day, as I do not have the wherewithal. I know some of you do though

I haven't grown those, but I usually stick to the varieties that say you can sow very early for my first lot.

I've got Globo on the go, but I have others that also have a March\April sowing date on the pack and I'm leaving them for a while yet  :)

I could resist no longer.  I have just sown some Yellow Rynsburger, Roscoff pink, Long Red Florence, Zebrune shallots and Rouge Pale de Niort.  All tucked up in the heated propogator.
