My sprouts are looking very good on the plot.  A lot of them are decent size and I have been picking a few.  Is it ok to leave them on the plant until december the 25th, or will they be past their best by then?  My plan this year was to grow all the veg for dec 25th lunch, so dont want things to be over too soon!!

it depends on the variety and on the weather - if you are growing an "early" variety, they might not be as good as now when the time comes.  Also, if the weather goes cold then very mild, plants may be tricked into going into spring mode, and the other hazard is if we get strong winds and plants are rocked (disturbing the roots), the sprouts might blow.  Why not freeze some as standby?  I used to have the idea of a Christmas dinner with certain crops picked fresh off the plot - until one year it was 3 inches under solid ice and I couldn't get to the plot let alone the spade in the ground  LOL

They are Nelson, so just checked online and they should be being harvested now to december. Hmm, looks like I got an early variety.

I only have a very small freezer, so we struggle to store a lot of stuff.  I'll try and get a lunches worth frozen, just in case!

they should slow down in the cooler weather, but they may blow by the day.

i'm no good at freezing sprouts, our frozen ones last year were awful. must try harder this year.

I ACTUALLY bought sprouts last weekend, totally unaware ours were ready.
Just hope they don.t peak too soon.

I grow a variety called "Trafalgar",which are a later type. (I've often wondered if there's a connection between the Nelson and Trafalgar varieties).

I also resist the temptation to sow too early and wait until mid April,so that the sprouts are not maturing too early. I may be wrong with this, but I think a sprout that is maturing later in the cooler weather has a less of a tendency to "blow". This may, of course not work this year with the milder weather.

Currently my sprouts are about the size of a marble and putting on weight quite nicely, so fingers are crossed.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
