Fruit tree where silver leaf has been
« on: September 22, 2015, 09:14 »
I have an old plum, which has succumbed to silver leaf and doesn't produce any decent fruit.  I'm going to chop it down and burn it.  I'd like to replace it with something else, but due to the silver leaf, should I be wary of what I go for?

I'm thinking an eating cherry tree as I really like cherries - not sure on which variety though. Would this be ok growing in the same spot?
If I did choose another plum should I plant it somewhere else and not where the old diseased plum was?

Thanks.

A bit of reading around suggests that silverleaf spores don't last in the environment for long, so there should be no residual infection in the soil around the tree, so long as no infected wood is left close by.

As a rule stone fruit trees should be replaced with apple or pear due to the build up of nasties in the soil. If you are adamant you really want another stone remove and replace as much soil to give the new tree a fighting chance  :)

Ah! That might stop me then!  I already have a pear and two apples on the site, so was looking for something similar to a plum or cheery.

Hmm. I'll have a think... Thanks for your help.

When I worked at East Malling Research Station they used to treat the soil by injecting it with Chloropicrin to prevent replant disease   We can't do that (thankfully).
