Chilli's yet to ripen
« on: September 12, 2015, 17:53 »
I have a few chili plants (all outdoor varieties) on my sheltered patio they were doing quite well until we got this spell of poor weather, now I am in a quandary as to what to do over the coming weeks, do I leave them outside and hope they ripen and I get a good crop.  Or do I annoy my OH and bring them inside to ripen.  I just don't know what to do for the best.

All plants have signs of ripening chilies but none are ready...yet!

Mine are out in the yard, I am going to put them in shed behind a south facing door with a glass panel in the top half tomorrow, should help them ripen. 😊

I have loads of Scotch bonnets in a big pot in the greenhouse, but they are all still green, as are the peppers.  The only ones that are ripening are the small chillies, but can't remember their name offhand.

My chilis are laden with fruit - grown outdoors - but all green. So, I've been picking them green and SO tasty! Not hot, but yummy, yummy. I've been slicing them and freezing them - throwing a handful into soups, stirfries and sauces. They've been excellent. But red? Nope.   :D

Glad I'm not the only one, grown 6 different types and they are all green. I've given up waiting so I've started to pick them.

On another note, I have a few plants in a pot that our still outside but I'm thinking of bringing them in doors before it gets too cold.

Not sure if it will work or not but worth a try

Yorkshire Lass, you can do as others have suggested and either pick them green (they do freeze very well so you don't have to use them all at once) or bring them in to a warm windowsill to keep the plants growing. Nights are getting a bit too cold for them to enjoy being outside for much longer. The plants do look attractive though, with green ad red fruits, so perhaps your OH can be persuaded  ;)

I cheated this year and bought four tiny seedling, but they've done well and are laden with red and green chillies. I think they're Apache. I've brought them inside now, but was wondering how to treat them. I assume reduce watering, but do they need any pruning? I'll be putting them in the Velux windows in the unheated loft conversion, so shouldn't drop below 10 degrees.

I bring the plants in and keep 'em on the windowsill in the day. My success rate is iffy, but I do have a 4 year old habanero, so I know I do something right.

I don't cut the plants back much. The only time I tried that they ALL died.

I have brought the Super Chilli & the Vampire Chilli inside, after a week the Super Chilli have started to go red (haapy days) but the Vampire chilli are are still low to ripen, I may have to give up on them this year.

You can still use them green though YL, Today I gave my first ripe Scotch bonnet to my step son.  He likes a bit of heat!  He was over the moon with it!

My 2 chilli plants are still in the greenhouse, but the other one only has tiny chillies on it.  I will leave them as long as possible, but the Scotch bonnet is just too big to bring inside.  Don't have enough space for it!   ;)

I've got some ripening and I'm going to dehydrate them as I've run out of space in the freezers.
