weekend work!!!
« on: September 09, 2015, 22:18 »
What's everyone's plans for the weekend?? Harvest time is upon and as I've done all my picking for this year I need to think about soil quality and general tidying. I need to check the compost heap and see if its ready to dig abit of it in to the spent beds. Also my plans for a raised seating area are well under way so need to get cracking with that. Already thinking of the next coming year as always so I will be setting out new beds and adjusting the original beds to take next year's crop. Be nice to hear from all you allotmenteers  :)

Off on holiday too!  Don't go anywhere during the school holidays.  Had an awful time recently caring for 91yr old mum with dementia and had to admit defeat last week and place her in a nursing home, so looking forward to getting away but got to get all the Cara up first then spread some compost.  Need to empty one bin and turn the other.  On high mouse alert!

Need to dig my spuds up before the rain next week. Not looking forward to it as there's not much of a crop and most will have been eaten by slugs. Really just need to get them out of the ground so they don't re grow next year.

Digging spuds, and still picking beans and courgettes. Everything is late this year so preparing for next year will have to wait.

Clean out the disorderly shed today. See how the weather goes for the rest.

Don't think I'll get to Fairyland for any serious work this weekend. Saturday, we have youngest Grandsons birthday lunch (in Cambridgeshire) can't believe he is 3. Sunday is busy with churchy stuff and the Plotfather is going away for 5 days with a mate, so will have to take him to the coach stop. First time he has been away without me. I'm looking forward to the peace and quiet!!!!!

Apart from the inevitable weeding, I need to get the spent broad beans, brassicas and snap peas up plus order some more mushroom compost to mulch the beds over winter. Greenhouse could do with a tidy-up too not to mention the shed!
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Several of my chums are going there too, Maxyboo!

Are you going to dress up twenties-style?

I will probably pull all the Beetroot and then pickle them. After that it will be digging, weeding and having a general tidy for the winter.

Having sorted out the shed which wasn't such a hard job, I've been having bonfires. One on each plot. Number 1 plot still has a pile of stuff but someone complained that I had smoked them out and what's left if going to be really smokey. Also the brazier was full enough not to be able to burn any more.

It's supposed to rain this weekend. If it rains enough it should be possible to get on with the digging on plot number 2.

As other respondents have mentioned, digging up potatoes. General tidying and planning for next year.

Potato sacks have been 'visited' by little rodents so had to replace with some home made bags made from brown paper which was heading to the work place tip.
