leek feed
« on: September 06, 2015, 11:09 »
My leeks are still small. I would like to give them a feed. What would be the best thing. I have chicken manure pellets  potash grow more. Thanks

I gave mine a  few handfuls of blood fish and bone, so from your list, the Growmore would be roughly the same  :)

Chicken pellets have a bit more nitrogen which is what they want. Work it into the surface and water it in. An alternative is a liquid feed which would be more quickly available. Leeks will grow a lot between now and the end of the year.

Ask two gardeners a simple question and you will get two different answers.

I asked this question a couple of weeks ago and received the same advice as Salmo gives.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

BFB is also excellent of course (or Growmore if that is what you have already) :D

I'd like to suggest you also give the leeks some Epsom Salts tickled into the soil surface as the magnesium helps them ward off rust to some extent. It strengthens cell wall so they are more robust.

Liquid feed weekly with a mixture of Comfrey, nettle tea, and all in a 25 gal butt with a holed bag of 6x chicken manure hanging inside!

Dilute roughly half and half with rainwater, and stand back (high pong, and also the leeks will take off too...;)

In fact, ask two gardeners for their views, and you'll probably get seven answers...
