Sarpo Mira taste test
« on: September 06, 2015, 07:04 »
Hi all

First year of growing Sarpo Mira and whilst the harvest is large and yes we missed the blight I am not very pleased with the taste test.
I find it a bland almost nothing of a taste and won't be using them next year

Are there any blight resistant full flavour variety varieties that others have used?

Wow-yours are early (or mine are late!) My Sarpo Mira are still in the ground with no sign of the foliage dying back. First year of growing them ironically in the season with the least blight since I started growing 6 years ago.

My Sarpo Mira foilage is still fully green and flowering, not much chance of picking yet.
Whereas my Rooster, Desiree and Maris Piper is now dying down fast and have been picking a few here and there, but will dig fully up end of this Month.
I have not grown Sarpo Mira for many years, but did scrape the soil around the foot of the plant mid august and they were very large, about 7-9 inches then. Then did the same end of August and picked out a few and baked them, they were good tasting. I'm sure they will be great bakers which is what my intention for them was, for having large baked potatoes throughout the winter months.
But sometimes its personal taste and use. We do love the Rooster for mash and chips, a great flavour.
Love the Desiree and Maris Piper for boiled and roast.

I had no choice but to dig mine up a month ago, but it is so warm in our cellar (we are having a blistering summer) that they have already gone sweet, :( though are still sound. I had to roast and freeze a load due to damage, they will be fine once the wood burner is up and running.

Good luck with your's everybody, I will try again next year

It's a shame they're not blight resistant  :(

didn't go for second earlies went straight into main crop. pulled the last of my 4 rows of sarpo mira yesterday and bagged up in hessian sacks.
my plot is starting to look bare as the runner beans will be finished  in the next few weeks leaving just leeks, a row of parsnips  and a row of swedes.

carrots failed miserably this year

i grew carolus from t&m this year, no blight waxy creamy texture, i will be growing it again.
i found the same as you that sarpo mira tasted foul and also get powdery scab on my soil so not for me.sarpo axona and blue danube were very similar to mira.
kifli is a good waxy one but the blight resistance isnt as good as the sarpos.
best tasting for me is carolus and cara in the blight resistant choice.

My Sarpos are still in the ground the foliage is quite manky but they'll stay there until frost is forecast because I have limited storage.
I've grown them the last 2 years and found they get quite warty in my ground so they need pealing which means there only good for roasting or mashing. They certainly arnt tasty like new potatos

Mine are still in the ground and are only just starting to flower, the foliage looks great on them so I suspect that unless they get a blast of frost they will be there for the next four weeks or so.

We grew them last year and found them really nice for mash and roasting.  I found Setanta to be the best of all.
