large trellis garden divider
« on: August 27, 2015, 13:07 »
Hi all,
we want to put up a large trellis at the back of a bed in the middle of the garden to be a sort of divider covered with climbers. We wanted something about 8ft high, but having looked trellis panels only seem to come in 6ft sizes maximum. I'm thinking we could put two 6ft x 4ft panels on top of each other? Anyone got a better idea? I hope the description makes sense of what we're trying to achieve.

Thanks

Would you need to go to the ground with the trellis, you could start 2ft up.
A woman's place is in her garden.

Very few climbers would cover the bottom of a trellis anyway, will let air in, you could plant some shrubs etc to the front as well

Yes great idea, thanks very much. It will be at the back of a large bed so you won't see the gap anyway.

OK, now on to my next question related to the same structure.

What climber to grow over it? I want something evergreen that will cover it fairly quickly

There are evergreen clematis, then of course ivy, but no real flowers of note, but you could grow a climbing rose as well, depends how wide it will be as to how many you will have space for.

You could try trachelospermum jasminoides, or tr. asiaticum. It would take a little longer to grow, but climbs rapidly once it has established its roots. Mine has been in flower since June, and is still full of buds and the scent is wonderful.

yes I like the jasmine, is it fully hardy though? Its a fairly sheltered position but we get some low temperatures on winter nights sometimes

I have it and have never seen it suffer from the cold. In fact, some winters its leaves turn a beautiful red colour. I think it's definitely worth trying as it does smell gorgeous  :)

Often panels can be fixed at ground level to an upright concrete wall that looks like stone, usually in white. For evergreen climbers you could try a variety of Euonymus which will grow upwards if supported by the panels, or you could train a cotoneaster or a pyracanthus to grow up it.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
