Potato fruits??
« on: August 21, 2015, 12:45 »
My neighbour took this pic of her potatoes with what looks like tomatoes on the end. I believe pots and toms are in the same family so are these potato "fruits" resulting from their flowers?

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Yes they are related and those are the fruits of the potato plant, but they are poisonous.  If your neighbour has children, best remove them and put them in the bin out of harms way  ;)

They are called potato apples, some varieties have them and some don't.

I have read that you can grow potatoes from them. There are a blogs out there explaining how to but it all seems to be a bit of a faff- especially for a no-faff gardener.

Years ago, I heard of some old boys who used their tomato leaves as a kind of tobacco...

But that was many, many years ago, so don't worry, we're not back onto an E-Spud post...

How else do you think new varieties of potatoes are produced.

From cross pollinating the first flowers to marketing a new commercial variety takes many years.
