How to stop raspberries from spreading
« on: August 17, 2015, 16:01 »
Hi All,

I am currently in the planning stage for my new garden and would like to interoperate some raspberries (Autumn and summer ).  I will be using raised beds and have a seperate bed for both types.

I am well aware that Raspberries  spread through suckers, what is the best way to do this?  A Relative once used pond liner in a trench but are there other or better ways?

Thanks in advance.

beds will be 1.2m by 2.4m and about 20 cm high.

You have raised beds, and raspberries are very shallow rooted. Very likely you will not have a problem.

I have a row of each and after fruiting and having the usual clearing of old vines I just hoe any suckers that appear where they shouldn't.

That has to be one of gardening's great myths - some of us up here have been clearing beds on our allotments and shallow rooted they are really not once established. Admittedly they are not deep rooted like trees but they are not what we would call shallow.  Mine certainly escaped scaffold boards around the border edges eventually. Mind I did have enough runners this year to completely replace a bed!

We have a bed with Raspberries in and find suckers up to 3m away!
I have thought about digging a trench 18" deep around the bed and lining the side with DPM to try to stop them wandering.

The old method was to bury corrugated iron sheets around the Rasps bed, I suppose the equivalent now would be burying thick plastic material around but not under the rasps bed.
Do you really need al that lettuce/

I agree with Christine. Mine are in a raised bed and some suckers have come up just outside the boarding but they are easily strimmed off or pulled out.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

So that's why I was digging out rusting sheets of the stuff on the part of my plot that hadn't been cultivated for 10 years+ (They were near cemented pole bases that had rotted as well). I HATED clearing that part and often wondered who would be stupid enough to do that. At least I now know why  :(

Thank you for the replies, I agree that in my experience raised beds are not a deterrent in themselves.

Has anyone got any practical and or proven methods that ideally don't involve putting corrugated metal in the plot?

I want to have raspberries on my new allotment plot but know absolutely nothing about how to lay them out so this thread is very interesting.

Plant them in a pot then sink the pot with the rim standing proud. They will need dividing and repotting every few years but should stop the majority of suckering  :)

Rather than corrugated Iron, I used 12" plastic barge board each side of my raspberry bed and it worked a treat. No suckers got through and when I moved the bed the barge board was as good as new ready for huge new bed. Barge board is used to seal the eves in houses and you can get it in Wickes etc.

Mine get mowed off either side, but they've still become too congested to fruit properly.

This winter I'm going to dig them up give the bed a good weeding and some manure and replant the strongest looking pieces.
That should sort them out  :D

I knew someone else who sunk those 2' square concrete slabs used on pavements / driveways / cheap patios around the raspberry bed.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
