Tigerella
« on: August 01, 2015, 21:38 »
I imagine several people are aware that T&M had an accident and mixed Tigerella with Gardeners' Delight seed (The latter is what I thought I had). They rang me to explain this and offered me a voucher but they did not explain why all my Tigerella plants are very weak, whereas the other varieties that I have grown are perfectly strong plants. They have all been germinated, grown on and planted together in exactly the same conditions.

Can anyone tell me if Tigerella are unreliable or much more vulnerable to culture problems than most others?

P.S. Now I see that Alanofcarlisle has asked the same question, and some people agree but others don't. I think I will avoid them in future (provided T&M don't repeat)

Don't know about T&M, but I grow my Tigerella from saved seed from previous years, and mine are really nice strong plants with lots of fruit on this year.

Sorry your's are not good this year.

I am growing Tigerella and Gardeners Delight and the plants are the same size and strength - strong and healthy - and if it wasn't for the difference in the tomatoes I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them.

I always grow Tigerella cos they're good grillers  :tongue2:  They are fine and as robust as a good tomato should be. Not at all difficult. They look lovely too  :)

Well, all you Tigerella lovers, please check the pic of seedlings below - left to right are Sungold, Sweet Aperitif, Tigerella. They are at first true leaf stage, all germinated under exactly the same conditions in a temp controlled propagator in the same seed compost.

Does Tigerella normally produce first leaves as screwed up as these?

That's more or less how my Tigerella seedlings looked when they grew their first true leaves.

This is my first year growing tomatoes from seed and the Tigerellas are doing great. They got scorched quite badly earlier in the summer, but with a bit of TLC they have recovered nicely. The fruits are still green but they look great!

So did I, and to be fair, it's not a bad crop from such scrappy little plants. But I was not impressed by the flavour and I will go back to Gardeners' Delight next year.
