Sowing onions - help please.
« on: July 19, 2015, 08:59 »
I've never grown onions (!) - but I'm standing ready with my packet of Sturon and I read somewhere that August 18th is THE date to plant them - anyway.
My soil is clay but reasonably well-dug and we've tilled to a 'fair fineness'.
So, do I just sow them in a row - covering them lightly? They look so teeny and vulnerable!

I've always sown mine in December or January, but I think if you are growing for showing then they seem to start earlier. Not that I really know,I've only grown from seed a few times.  Unless you've got sets and they are sprouting now then you might get a crop.
Or if they are over wintering sets then I usually put mine in about October.

Indeed, Ivor - the very place. Also - I had visions of planting a couple of rows and just thinning them out, rather than all this transplantation mumbo-jumbo. Would that work?

I agree with the previous comments. August is early to sow.
Sturon are readily available as sets in the new year, so if your seed sowing fails you will have a backup plan.

So experiment, sow some in August/December/Spring. Sow in pots and in the open. Keep notes and decide for yourself.
I don't grow exhibition onions but I do try to follow these guidelines.

Producing a good crop of onions is very rewarding.

That would work. In fact probably better than messing about in modules. Sow them thick enough and do not thin until the Spring. The thinnings can be transplanted into their own row.

I have grown Japanese onions sowing in August and they provide a good early onion crop.

Never heard of growing Sturon that way but if Johnsons say it works it probably does. I might try some myself.

Onions from seed - August sowing
http://www.realseeds.co.uk/onions.html  gives a good explanation of what to do.

The nub of the advice is " For full-size onions:   Sow it around Aug 18th in a closely-spaced row. At the start of October they will be a decent size and you just transplant them out to their final position spaced about 15cm apart. As soon as the weather improves in spring they'll be off and away, giving you earlier / larger onions than you would get otherwise. "

They recommend Paris Early White or Sturon if you have mildish winters.

I agree with the previous comments. August is early to sow.

I think LottyLouis is wanting to grow overwintering onions for harvest next June from seed.   Mid August is the right time to sow these.
Sowing in Dec/January is the right time for summer onions, harvest around August.

If you are sowing in August to overwinter them, you will need to use a cold-hardy variety like Paris Early White.
