« on: July 18, 2015, 18:55 »
This is the first year in the last 4 years that my onions and Garlic haven't fallen foul of Rust. Has anyone else found this?

Not one spot of rust on my garlic this year, but my onions from sets have all succumbed to white rot but the ones from seed are ok.

when you say lost, did they die?
Rust has never killed my garlic before but I've not had rust on the onions that I can remember, so I don't know about them.

No rust on my garlic so far this year (February planted, so a few weeks still to go.)

Same stock I've been planting for the past 5 years, but having grown them in more or less the same spot for the previous 4 years with increasing rust problems, I planted them in a new area this year.

Weather conditions may have played their part, but it has to be worth rotating garlic (and other alliums.)

These reports about white rot possibly being imported with onion sets and garlic bulbs are a bit worrying - saving home grown healthy garlic and shallots for replanting will avoid taking that risk, and growing onions from seed may well become more popular.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I got some rust on garlic this year, but not nearly as bad as last year.  Like Annen I have never had rust on onions.

My garlic was elephant garlic and its the second year saving my own.

Last year my early purple white got smashed by rust and I had kept my own bulbs from that for about 6 years but didn't plant any this year cos I knew what was gona happen.

Will never plant onion sets again tho, will always be from seed from now on.

no rust on my onions, but then no leaves left either, just pulled the whole lot this morning as something had had all the leaves, so they wernt going to get any bigger.

Interesting thread. All my garlic, onions, shallots and elephant garlic were grown from sets sowed out end October last year. The only rust was on the garlic (still a good crop). Everything else was totally clean and all cropped well.

A tentative conclusion that garlic is more susceptible to rust?
