Is it too late to plant peas?
« on: July 18, 2015, 18:25 »

Just harvested all my peas, is it too late to replace them with another row of Rhonda peas?

has a massive harvest today but I don't like to see an empty space on the plot

Late peas usually get mildew and maggots  :( So not worth it IMO.

I fear others may be correct but I sowed some mangtout a couple of weeks ago and they are up now.
Mildew is clearly a risk but maggots attack the pea seeds so my hope is no seeds no maggots.😱😱😱
They were old seeds that I had so nothing venture nothing gain😃😃

Good luck to both of us!

I had the remains of three packs of seed all of which had a best before date of 2015, so I stuck them in last week.  Even if they get mildew I will dig them in and use them as a green manure to put nitrogen back into the soil.

Yep...I've got some young sugar snap plants that will go out on lotty in the next few days...as someone said on here recently...She who dares...wins! And they're green manure if they fail...a Win/Win situation.  :D

The maggots come from the pea moth which lays its eggs on the plant.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The maggots are still in mangtout and sugar snaps but only tiny so you do not notice them. High protein peas!

Indeed! Mangetout have seeds inside, did you not sow some in order to get the plants in the first place? !
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

All being well I will harvest the pods before the seeds are perceptible inside. If I can't see the peas hopefully the maggots can't be seen either. Mind you I hope to be moth free anyway as these peas are protected by debris netting.

Cheers HH

I think pea moth lay their eggs on flowers in June and July. As yours will flower outside the main egg laying period they shouldn't suffer.

Thanks for that comment, crh75. I found this on the pea moth:

I might try a summer sowing of Douce Provence. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. And there are far more peas in the packet than I can sow in autumn!

Looking at that site it says that the caterpillar bores into the developing pea pods and suggests that mangetout will be harvested before that happens.

A mangetout pod is a developed pea pod! The pod is developing as it emerges from the flower.

I'm trying a late summer sowing of Douce Provence myself. Got loads of seeds, what's to lose?
