Garlic question
« on: July 18, 2015, 15:34 »
Hello all.
I've never grown garlic before and thought I'd try some this year. I've had a read round to try and decide which variety to get and I understand that they can be hard or soft neck.
I'm sure there are pros and cons to each type - I've heard that one type stores better?
Has anyone got a favourite variety they could recommend.  We live in the warm/sunny/mild (???!!!???) South West.
 ;)
Carpe Diem

Soft neck garlics store better and are usually recommended for the milder climates.  They do well for me here in the south east and the best crop I have had for 2 years running now has been Provence Wight.  It gives decent sized flavourful cloves and plenty of them.  Fiddly diddly cloves that are a pain to prepare are a pet hate of mine.

Hard neck garlic is hardier and is recommended for more northerly climes.  It is worth trying though as the garlic scapes (flowering stems) are a lovely crop in their own right.  You snap them off and the head of garlic still goes on to form.  The one I tried that really didn't like it down here was Music, so steer away from that.  Shame, as it does so well further north and has huge cloves.

Garlic doesn't take up much room, so you could try a couple of types without sacrificing too much ground  :)

I am not in the south, but I really recommend Sulmona di Rossa from Seeds of Italy.  Large cloves and a lovely flavour.
