The first of my new "Elegance" strawberries
« on: July 04, 2015, 12:03 »
I just about gave up growing them in a raised bed because they seemed to succumb to everything going and even the taste wasn't that good, but this year was persuaded to give it another go. As the raised bed still has remnants of couch grass in it, they are still in their pots but have just started fruiting. We had two yesterday and - by gum - they taste like strawberries used to do. Anyone else growing these?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Not heard of those. I grow Garigutte, and Mara de Bois and some pineberries. But these are in pots still as I am waiting for OH to build the strawberry beds.

Despite them being in pots they have given several bowlfuls.

Oh - I was tempted to get some Gariguette as well and they are in pots too and almost ready to have their first berries. It will be interesting to see how they compare.

I would be interested to see what you think, and how they compare in taste too.

Personally I think that the Gariguette are the best strawberries I have tasted to date.

I have some pineberries too and they are very interesting but for a real strawberry I go for Gariguette evry time.

I had some Cambridge favourite and another old type of strawberry, the  name of which escapes me but I didn't think much of them.
