Training a pumpkin up a trellis?
« on: June 30, 2015, 14:08 »
My pumpkin is romping away now, but I've plannted it near to my butternut squash, which I am training up wire between two posts.  The pumpkin has taken a liking to this and is starting to head skyward too, sending out tendrils and climbing up the wire trellis.

Is this a bad thing, or will it be ok? I expect when the fruit starts to grow large, it's going to need supporting?  It would help stop it growing all over the place though!!

It might swamp the butternut, but other than that it's fine as long as you can support the fruit  ;)

Thank goodness you replied Mum, because we have six pumpkins and one is escaping as of today!

Time to drag the wooden frame over for them, but I wonder what they'll do if they get - er - pumpkin sized...

Thanks all. Looks like I may have to raid some charity shops for a few extra large over the should boulder holders!

I think that depends on the variety of the pumpkin. Little ones like Munchkin or jack be little could do very well on a trellis, without having much extra support. If you're growing a larger variety like Jack O' Lantern it'd probably do better on the ground.
