romanesco trouble
« on: June 29, 2015, 16:33 »
I seem to be losing all of my romanesco. They were prefectly healthy until the heads appeared.
they get so far then become discoloured, some are amost black, some look blown. they have been
under mesh from day one. any advice will be warmly received. cheers.

Mine did that last year - I assumed they had got too warm (late August/September) and blown...
We still ate the ones that had only just turned

Have you had a sudden change in temperature? That may have caused the problem. They are probably still edible but less attractive. Hate to say it but not an easy veg to grow and way over rated ... just my opinion My wife loves them I am meh on them much the same as asparagus way over rated and take up a hell of a lot of space that you could grow a few crops that will stand for a while. Anyway that's enough of me trashing something you obviously like sorry :)  try eating them I thin you will still get the same flavour but not the look you want. I grew some cauli's that went the same last year they tasted just as good but looked ...ODD but when covered with cheese sauce who cares!

It's a bit early for them to be making heads, they're usually an Autumn harvest - cos they're not keen on hot weather.

Thanks everyone for your replies, I think you have it. It has turned a lot warmer this past week, fortnight
after an absolutely baltic spring. I,ll have to sow later next year. oh well live and learn, thanks again
          for all your help.

If you re-sow now, you could still get a crop. The instructions on mine said to sow in July.

Mine too - although I did sneak them in a couple of weeks early!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Crickey, never thought about resowing, that sounds great. I was wondering what to do with the big
space left after I pull them up tomorrow. Thanks for that, all.
