Soft fruit question
« on: June 26, 2015, 10:41 »
I have three blackcurrant (I think!) cuttings - all doing well - big and strong and lovely. Today I noticed the tops of two of them were sort of curled over and top of stem covered in a dark grey powdery substance - aphids of some sort? They were also absolutely overrun with ants. I just lopped the tops off...but - what pest is this? Are the ants helping me out? And what would the treatment be?  :)

Yes, sounds like mealy aphids.  Usual treatment of squishing or soapy water is best.  The ants are not helping you, quite the opposite, they are farming the aphids and therefore defending them from ladybirds etc who want to eat them.
