Spindly Alicante Tomato plants
« on: June 24, 2015, 07:01 »
Has anyone else got a problem with their Alicante tomato plants?  I've got 6 different varieties of tomatos growing in my greenhouse and all are doing well except the Alicante.  The plants were the same size and healthy when I put them all in but are not thriving at all.  They look very spindly, I was wondering whether it was a problem with the seed.

all my tomato plants are behind and looking spindly this year.  Its been too cold.  They are in my polytunnel, but the temperatures are not much better now than a couple of months ago and they dont like the cold.  Hopefully they will get bigger, but for now they are still producing tomatos so that is something i suppose.

There will have been nothing wrong with the seed Charlotte, don't worry about that.

Just feed the plants, and maybe a dose of Epson Salts if they are yellowy, and they will grow  :)

Are they getting more shade than the others or did you use a different compost? I sowed some in late March and another kind (a freebie) in mid-April in my cold GH and all four (can't manage any more than that) are looking fine despite the cold day and night temps and me occasionally forgetting to close the door at night! I sowed them in Verve and put two into 10" pots in Miracle-Gro with feed and water additives and the other two into the GH bed.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Mine are planted nearest to the glass and directly into the ground just like the others.  I gave some of the plants to a friend and, despite his looking robust at an earlier stage like mine, his are also splindly hence me wondering whether it was a seed problem.
