Garlic as a Slug and Snail repellant
« on: June 23, 2015, 07:43 »
Ok all you knowledgeble people,

I have heard and read some interesting stuff with regards to the use of infused garlic water used to deter and possible killing the nemisis of allotmenteers - Slugs and Snails.

Has anyone used this method and with what results but importantly does the garlic taint any products as it is absorbed ??

Many Thanks

Many of us use it as an organic insecticide for greenfly, cabbage fly and caterpillars.
Sure it may work for slugs and snails as a deterrent too along with all the other ways.
Blending it and getting it as a liquid is important, otherwise you will clog up your spray gun.
I make mine up like this;

I remember listening to GQT once and one of their experts new of a Hosta grower who put used this stuff and it worked for him, no slug or snail damage.  He did say it had to be applied weekly though.  Couldn't remember the exact recipe so thanks for that link Lettice.  Think there may be lots of smelly kitchens around now!

OK garlic may work on English slugs and snail but what happens if your slugs and snails originated from France or Eastern Europe where they use more garlic  :nowink:

I have used it successfully to control pea and bean weevil, but they still munch a few.  It's quite bad on my plot and I have lost plants to it if untreated.   I have never found it any good against slugs or snails sadly.
