Courgette - too late?
« on: June 12, 2015, 20:43 »
As I've just obtained my allotment I'm a bit behind.  I have grown some courgettes and the are still quite small but I just wondered whether I'm too late to plant them out?

Absolutely not too late, spot on some might say.  If they are small, protect them from slugs and birds for a while until they are established and beginning to grow away.  Nothing is really getting on with growing so far this year because of the cold winds and dips in temperature so lots of things will catch up really quickly if they are planted soon.  Only things you need to worry about are things which need a long hot growing season and they should have been started off inside a month or two ago.  Good luck.

i sowed mine in the poly tunnel a few weeks ago, about the same as i did last year. they're still quite small and won't be planted out for another couple of weeks.

i grow mine between my sweetcorn to make better use of space and keep the weeds down, for this reason i need to sow mine a little later so they don't swamp the sweetcorn. wouldn't say a get too much of a reduced crop, just slightly later.

I sowed some around the end of June last year and still got a good crop off them. The ones I sowed earlier were getting a bit tired by the end of the season, but the late sown ones were still going strong. Will probably do the same this year.

I've just had to resow most of mine as the slugs seem to prefer the plants for munching on this year. They have really come up quickly now it's warmer, so I don't think I will have to wait too long for fruit.
