Ha ha ha, Mum!

There used to be a path down to the stream, where we built a small dam and could collect water easily.

Now it's completely overgrown and too difficult to reach, but some years ago, some of the old boys rigged up a pump and a series of pipes, to get water up to a communal trough!

That went well, until there was the whole of Kent Water Board descending on them with legal teams, etc, and threats of beheading for extracting water without a licence! Big hoo-haa and all that, lots of our money spent on much ado about nothing!

And the old boys only wanted to water their allotments!

our allotment doesn't have standpipes but the 1 across the road has.
we have troughs so been sneaky I rig up a hosepipe.
and every one else has used my method,
with my help. we just share the water time.
my plot takes a hour to water once a week.too give it a good soaking.
with watering cans it would take hours.
we only have a few troughs,
our allotment is run for the council by a commercial estate agents.
 who don't have a Scooby doo.about anything.
we still have 12 plots available after 2 years and there is suppose to be a waiting list in our area.
that's what you get if you don't advertise
and the councils web site doesn't get up dated.
brains of rocking horses if you ask me.

your site might have had high water bills, so can either ban hoses or put up the rates. Depends on the soil and plants for how much watering is needed. Potatoes and onions in the fields are being watered, peas and beans are watered a lot less. Test the soil for dryness.

As soon as a ban is mentioned you can bet it rains.  And rains.  Maybe that's just here...

Personally I've mixed feelings about using hoses - yes they're great for those who can't carry cans back and forth (and as a work saver for those who can  ;) ), but they also make people lazy and overwater. On my site I often see people watering with hoses while it's raining, leave sprinklers on all day or overnight, leave them running whilst doing other jobs...... the list goes on.

Although, being a Yorkshireman, the fact that I have to pay for their excesses annoys me the most as the site water bill is divided up and added to the rent the following year pro rata to the size of your plot :tongue2:
