apple tree
« on: June 08, 2015, 22:22 »
Ive got an apple tree for the last 4 years ( 🏫since we moved in here) each year its had masses of apples , its not a huge tree this year there were lots of blossom and masses of leaves and very healthy leaves i was wondering if fruit trees have a rest every now and again , its a knarled  old thing it grows on a slant and who ever planted it staked it to a lump of rusty pipe and didnt loosen the string which cut into the trunk , we pulled out the pipe and managed to get the string off as well so all in all its had a hard life 😢

If they have a particularly heavy crop one year then they can often follow it with a light crop the following year  :)

I've got a Bramley that's gone biennial after cropping very heavily a couple of years ago. This year (which should be another heavy year) I'm going to thin the blossom out to try and reduce the crop which should help it get back to a more annual cycle.

The main thing to do to keep it healthy is remove broken and damaged wood and keep the structure open with regular pruning. Do that and it should keep going and going.
