Spud query
« on: June 07, 2015, 18:17 »
During the monthly inspection this morning saw a few different rows of spuds that looked, maybe just maybe, like blight, with brown lesions on th eleaf tips...
But the blightwatch map is showing a blank and I 'called wolf' about blight a year or two ago so don't want to repeat that.
Having said that, one plot had the following spud that looked on its knees - maybe lack of water - any opinions?

I'm not sure that this is blight, Balders. Some spuds just don't thrive, and may have a bit of a problem down below - if you see what I mean...

We have a few like this, and they have some slug damage, and a few other nasties, but never fear, we always want a warning if blight occurs, but a case of 'late blight' is a bit too early yet methinks!

It could be blackleg.

Are the stems at the base shrunken and errrr - black?
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Ahh, yup I reckon blackleg is the culprit for this one. Thanks... (what a relief... its only Pectobacterium atrosepticum) ;-)

The others though.. wish I'd photo'd them...

Ho hum, thanks all.
