Strawberries doing weird stuff!
« on: June 06, 2015, 19:52 »
Now - I've grown strawbs before and they just grew - produced fruit - and then didn't!
I've got some plants now that have been producing whopper strawberries for weeks. Gorgeous. Now, suddenly they seem to have slowed down and the fruit they're producing is very small, quite dark and seemingly covered in little seeds! I've not eaten any of these small ones. All plants are first years - healthy, growing well and not, as yet, putting out runners.  Two varieties, Elsanta and Honeoye and both are behaving similarly. Any ideas?   ???
Carpe Diem

If you've been picking them for weeks already, it could be that they're coming to the end of the season.

First year is usually a bit hit and miss. Should be better next season.

Normally I don't let my strawberries produce fruit in the first year as it weakens the growth. But they do have a very short period of production - yes weeks. The fact that you see strawberries so long in the shops is that they are imported from warmer climes or grown in polytunnels in succession to keep the crop coming.

Neither of the varieties you mention are so-called 'everbearers', and even they produce fruit in flushes rather than continuously throughout the season.

Agree with the others - they probably think they've done enough for their first year.
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!
