Gooseberries in containers
« on: May 31, 2015, 09:09 »
Work patterns and family life are getting in the way of my plot-time... the one area of my plot that I've not been able to get on top of properly this year is my gooseberry / raspberry area - the weeds are in control there and its looking a bit shambolic.
I think I'll probably get rid of my summer fruiting raspberries which haven't fruited much for me in the last couple of years and concentrrate on my goosegogs and autumn fruiters.
I've got access to some very big tubs - roughly 3ft in diameter - would the gooseberries be ok in those? I could then more easily put weed membrane down in that area? Can't recall seeing anyone else container grow them - there may well be a reason for that...  ;)

Only thing then with tubs is  they are reliant on you for watering. Might it be worth digging all out in the autumn, thoroughly weeding & preparing, put membrane down & plant through, cover with woodchip/gravel/bark?

We had gooseberries in pots but it was very time consuming with the watering and feeding.

They are in the ground now.

You could cut the bases out of the tubs and sink them into the soil a little way.  That would help with the watering.

I would advise using a good soil based compost in the tubs like John Innes  :)

I have 1 in a tomato tub at home because I've need cleared the space for it on the plot. This is its second year in the pot its doing well lots of fruit this year. I've top dressed it with grow bag compost, fed it chicken pellets and am watering it every other day. It would dry out very quickly on the plot as I don't have chance to visit that often.

I've got 4 bushes in pots. Usually get a good crop. I'm a bit lazy about watering, but then they are in partial shade.

You can buy (or make, see instructables and the like) 'self' watering containers which are ideal for plants like gooseberry. You can leave them for several days at a stretch and the watering is really consistent which is great for soft fruit.
