Gooseberries Dying...Please Help :)
« on: May 25, 2015, 13:16 »
I planted my newly purchased Gooseberry bush way back in November last year and was pleased to see that it was coming along nicely.  In the March I gave it some nitrogen based fertilizer and it looked great however in the last couple of weeks I fear my plant is slowly dying.  Although the plant is producing fruit the leaves are all brown rounf the edges and some of the leaves are all shriveled up!!

Please can anyone make any suggestions to improve the plant..Thanks.

The variety is Lancashire Lad

I would also think it's likely to be dry at the roots, as it hasn't been there long it hasn't developed a wide root system.

Could be leaf scorch caused by a potash deficiency. Try giving it a feed with a tomato food!

As the above, but could also be wind damage as your site looks quite flat and open in the distance.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Is it in full sun? That plus wind could be doing it. My Invicta bushes are very unhappy in full sun and really happy in part shade.

Thank you for all your help and advise, I have decided on a three prong attack, water mulch and feed as you all have suggested.  With hindsight maybe I should have chosen a cooler spot on the plot, what about moving forward do you think I need to move the bush or will it grow stronger with a bit of TLC.

I guess you could try the feeding/mulching/watering and then if it is still unhappy at the end of the season you could consider moving it when it's dormant.

I was thinking of pulling off all the fruit so that it could concentrate on repair...any thoughts??

I don't want to lose the harvest but I don't want to lose future harvests too.

The fruit does suck up a lot of moisture so if the problem is under developed roots then that could well help. It certainly won't do any harm.
