Useful Knots for the allotment
« on: May 09, 2015, 13:49 »
My knowledge of how to tie different knots is almost non existent.

Are there any that you would recommend that I learn for using on the plot?

A granny knot and its sister the locked reef knot has served me well for years with the odd half hitch now and then. And as for the top of the bamboo wigwam, no knots involved, just a wire around or one of those plastic holey things. :)

I use a clove hitch for a lot of things it's very easy to do and self tightening and easy to undo, it tends not to slip either.

For joining canes and tying on netting I use ... cable ties.

If you are not sure how or why to use various knots search for "Scout knots" in the Internet.  You needn't worry about the "whippings" and the "lashings" it is a proper site!

I now use cable ties for most things, especially securing the canes for the runner beans. It used to make my arms ache such a lot when tying them up with string.

I am rubbish at knots. I think I have a funny brain, one that can't do knots!   :D

I bought one of those discs for the top of the bean wigwam and it was so stiff I couldn't get the canes into the slots.  You'd needs hands like Samson to prize the bu**ers apart. Chucked in the shed and never since seen the light of day  ::)

Plastic thingy with holes in for me too, but mine are getting old and brittle, so may have to go back to twine or garden wire.  I'm not good at knots though.   :(
