Weather forecast temperatures are usually taken above ground level, but that's not where the coldest temperature is.

I find here that temperatures of 5-6C (given in forecasts) can still result in frost, especially if skies are clear and there's not much wind.

However things like French/runner beans and tomatoes/peppers don't like temperatures below 10C, let alone frost! - so it's easy to see why early plantings often struggle without protection.

Oh yes, our plots are apparently in a frost pocket but not mine as one advantage of being next to the wood is that it protects me! (Makes up for the wildlife coming and investigating my plot first!)

I don't have anything tender out, just my spuds which are starting to poke through and will get earthed up. I was just interested...

Bitterly cold in Glasgow this morning although it's now a lovely sunny day.

There was ice on the top of my tomato blowaway this morning.  The tomatoes were tucked up safe in the house though. :)

1C recorded overnight in the greenhouse, and although the garden is quite warm in the shelter of fences and tall hedge - it's still chilly in the breeze on the allotments.

Ice on the car windows as I walked up to the allotment this morning - I'd earthed up potatoes. Lovely here now though. Raised beds very dry so I'd like some rain.

Everything at home still on window ledges rather than outside!

I put some seedlings back into the potting shed yesterday. Good job really, as I got up for work the car was covered in ice.

Even down here it is d@** cold in the early hours. I have covered over my potatoes today, as I would hate for them to get blasted

Minus 3 in the polytunnel last night in cumbria . The beans were flat this morning but have picked up now . Potatoes don't look good at all all withering up . 200 pots of marigolds look like they are for the compost  :(

lucky enough to grow at home so I have electric

put a fan heater on last night with a frost setting thermostat

checked the min/ max thermometer this morning and it got down to 3 degrees in there last night
out side we had frost on the grass

pleased to report all plants well

I have tomatoes , peppers , squashes , nasturtiums , dahlias ,marigolds , aubergines , pumpkins , and just through cucumbers

so I guess if it doesn't go below 3 degrees you should be safe  ;)

DAve toddy can you put some fleece over things just to try and keep the worst of it off in the polytunnel?  The potatoes will probably survive with only a minor set back - can you earth them up or put some newspaper on them?

Also frosty here this morning, down to 5C overnight it the heated propagator

I've had a look at the plants which were left in the main area of the greenhouse and there doesn't appear to be any problem today. We warmed up here pretty quickly after 7am.

No frost I could see when I left at 6am but won't be able to get to the plot until wed do won't know if spuds popped out and got slightly frosted... Plants in blow away (brassicas/leeks/lettuce/beans) all look ok though
