Up here in Northumberland we have been getting a lot of frosts recently, especially with the nicer/sunnier days. I have tomatoes to pot on, chillis and peppers doing well on a south facing windowsill and beetroot just showing in modules in the coldframe. The tomatoes will be going into an unheated polytunnel (due to lack of space).

Yesterday I sowed peas, mangetout, more beetroot, marigolds, little gem lettuce and planted some charlotte potatoes in bags.

Would it be safe to start planting seeds direct. looking to do some carrots for the first time. What about brassica's - is it too late as my first showing of Brussels and PSB have not germinated.

Sorry for all of the questions but it is a big learning curve.

The seed sowing and harvesting chart should help, bearing in mind your colder climate, the later dates may be the best for sowing.

and not to worry, we're still getting some cold/frosty nights here in the South as well,  we can get frosts until mid-May.

Hi Andy
My plot is in Prudhoe, almost next door to you. I've have peas and broad beans in the ground already and growing away quite happily but they aren't as far on as they were last year.

My seedling stuff such as lettuce, salad leaves, beetroot, coriander are all out in sunny spots in tubs on my concrete hard standing. They are showing but are slow to do rush into growth.

We are about two or three growing weeks behind last year looking at the pictures I took then.
