Can you grow anything in fresh manure
« on: April 14, 2015, 20:45 »
I've been given 13 bags if manure, straight off the field.

Can I grow anything in them at all? Or would it be too intense for anything, with high levels of ammonia etc....?

If not I'll let it rot down for winter....
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !

you could take a risk ,put it in a pile then make a hole in the pile and fill with compost and use for marrow's ! But I would store it for the autumn  :)
I cook therefore I grow

Add it in layers to your compost bins, you'll soon be made some lovely black gold for another year

Blueberry like acid soil???

i read somewhere that blueberry roots can get affected with burn, not sure how true this is. i'm thinking that once it's rotted down it may do more harm than good.

Weeds generally do not grow on muck heaps until they have cooled down a bit...................and weeds grow almost anywhere ! :D

If you leave it for a short while to dry off a b it and the stink to abate somewhat then you can. I grew beans, squash, courgettes, spuds, sweetcorn and strawbs in it.  I even left some in the bags and planted the courgettes one per bag ☺

It does slump quite a bit so be prepared to top up.  Also make sure you plant good, robust plants.  Courgette/squash stalks are a bit delicate so don't put the muck immediately around the stem. Muck can dry out a lot so be prepared to water.  Also blackbirds love to rootle about in muck and will fling it all over the place, your plants with it, so take care ☺
