Sowing salsify
« on: April 11, 2015, 14:40 »
I've just got some salsify seeds and am wondering whether they germinate easily or take ages like parsnips? How long should I expect them to take to come up and is it worth pre-chitting?
thanks
Rachael

The ones I sowed last year were up in about a week or so. Slugs ate them twice before I sussed what was going on and put pellets down...

Yes, I found them easy enough, but just like Surbie had a slug problem that ate a few of the first row.  They were no trouble at all until harvest time.  If you think it's difficult digging a parsnip up, wait until you try salsify.  The taste was very good though.  I grew Sandwich Island.

That's v true! I wasn't expecting them to have really strong side roots. I grew them in a big pot and had a fair amount of trouble getting them out.
