Chickens have not started laying yet
« on: April 08, 2015, 13:16 »
Hi ,

I have 3 chickens who stopped laying back in August. They had a bit of a shock as I lost one chicken to peritonitis but nothing too traumatic (except for that one !).

One of the chickens had a little bit of leg scale mite but that has cleared up now.
They have all molted and have re-grown the feathers.

Now spring is here and only one of the chickens has started to lay again.

How long do I leave it before I replace the two who are not laying? could they just start up again?

Many thanks for any help

Tim
Thinking of calling my shed "the Dun Inn".

How old are they and what are they eating at the moment? Also what breed are they?  :)

Tim, my hens have been quite slow to lay this year. One started late February but the rest have just started recently. I know that it is day length that kick starts them but I really think that the cold, dull spring was a factor in the delay.

My light sussex hen was still producing well at 5 years old !

A bit of sun on their backs may get 'em going soon!

Are they on layers? I would have thought they would be laying by now really. Do you (or possibly someone who thinks they are being nice  ::) ) feed them treats? Just trying to rule out anything obvious. If they are healthy, happy and eating plenty of layers with the very rare treat they shouldn't be far away from laying  :)

I have some Sussex hens and they are the ones who have just started to lay so hopefully yours will start soon.

Just a thought - do they need wormed and have you checked they do not have any mites or other bugs. That would certainly have an effect on laying.

Hi All and thanks for your comments.

action plan -

1-I wormed them a couple of months ago so they are certainly due

2-I do feed them a few treats every couple of days, maybe corn or the outside of cabbages etc. Should that stop ?

3- I will inspect for mite

thanks everyone

Are they Sussex pure breed or Suusex hybrid? :)
