Peas grown in guttering (modified).
« on: April 05, 2015, 16:43 »

I do this and have had great results.  I have permanently fixed a semi circle of ply at one end of the guttering, at the other I have the same semi circle of guttering but I have drilled holes on the two sides and from below and kept this in place with loosely inserted nails.

This prevents the soil running out of the ends and removing the nails and semi circle of ply allows the pea loaded soil to be slid out into a pre-prepared trench.  The first time I tried this the nails were  firmly fixed and I lost quite a few pea plants from the end while manouvering the guttering trying to remove the (now solid) nails.

It is easier this way - you know it makes sense :D  Cheers,  Tony.
I may be growing OLD, but I refuse to grow UP !

Never used cling film, but I found the duct tape dried out and curled up allowing compost to spill out.

Cheers,  Tony. :)

No, no bother with duct tape, I usually have to peel last years off to apply a new lot.   :nowink: :nowink:

I make ends out of thick polystyrene, wedged into the end of the guttering. Easy to remove and re-usable every year.

And what about drainage? Do you have holes drilled in the bottom of the gutter or do you leave drainage at the ends?

The water usually dribbles out of the ends, if necessary I poke a hole in the ends with a hot skewer.

I drilled holes in mine and just put a sandwich bag over the ends.

Wickes were selling off guttering ends so I bought a couple. Job done.
This will be the second year with guttering and I wouldn't do it any other way now.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!
