When to close up the fruit cage.

I like to keep my fruit cage open as long as I can, hopefully so the birds can get in there and eat the nasty bugs that may be in there.  The buds are showing on the espalier cherry tree so are the birds likely to nibble at them ?

Shall I close it up or leave it a while longer?

So, what is the average cross sectional area of your common or garden bee? 

My fruit cage mesh size is .300 " and I've just read that 'Stella' is a self fertile cherry variety but I would still like to see bees buzzing around the blossoms.  One thing I read was that sweet cherry trees do not come into their own until 5 - 7 years old!
