Raspberry Cane runners
« on: April 03, 2015, 18:05 »
Planted some Raspberry Canes in my allotment fruit cage last year and they are throwing up runners all over.
Can I take everything out and start again in the same ground with a variety that will not spread?

Do they come in a non-spreading variety?

I don't think there is such a thing as a non-spreading raspberry - it's is how they grow and fruit.

Afraid not 😱only thing you can do is attack them when they surface in the wrong place.

i guess you could possible grow them in sunken containers in the same place, should definitely slow them down from spreading.

to be honest they're not to bad to pull or dig up and you will always have extra canes to dig up to expand, sell, swap or give away.

i have been suprised how far they spread, i'm just hoping that mine don't start appearing in the lawn (about 2 meters away). i have got fairly deep boarding sunk in so hoping that will help, but looking back i think i should have put a deep polythene barrier in.

A vertical barrier sunk into the soil to a depth of about 15" will stop most of the root suckers, because raspberries aren't very deep rooted.

I used some spare PVC pond liner, but something like corrugated plastic sheet would be considerably easier to work with. Only did it on the plot side of my row of raspberries though, so I still have to deal with shoots appearing in my delphinium border, the hedge, near the shed....     ::)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

They escape my raised bed into the grass paths but are easily pulled up or just cut off.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I put my rasps along the boundary fence with a length of fascia board sunk into the ground on my side. It stops the suckers coming up on my side but they constantly appear in my next door neighbour's lawn and it's amazing how far they can travel!!
