I just dig a trench then use a trowel to put in individual spuds at a slightly lower level. Finally just rake the soil back.

Seems to put them low enough as far as I can see

I have poor soil so a deep trench half filled with any rotted down material then planted and back filled.
But that's the only actual digging I do
