MY beds run North-South and I have planted the Comfrey in the North end of each bed.  I've got about 10 beds, 4 or 5 of them have Comfrey at the North end, the others have other perennial veg - Globe / Jerusalem Artichoke, Rhubarb, etc.

Just to update this in case anyone else might be interested in this topic. I'll be sowing crimson clover at the end of Autumn to use as a green manure. For this growing season I've got hold of and organic, vegan fertiliser that is supposed to be general purpose.
It's made by a company called Down to Earth.
