Leggy plants
« on: March 05, 2015, 12:27 »
Hi All
I recently set cabbage, PSB and collis  seeds off in the airing cupboard, and as soon as they popped their heads up moved them to a cold garage in a box lined with silver foil with a hydroponic light a foot above them.

Now a week later they are going leggy, does anyone know why?
I brought the light to stop this happening.
Have I done something wrong?

Brassicas do not need heat at any stage such as you will find in an airing cupboard. They were probably fated from the outset to be weak due to this. Even an hour or two at these temperatures with no light will seal their fate.

I only germinate in temperatures no higher than you'll find in my frost free greenhouse with good all round light.

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Frost free greenhouse with good all round light is getting up to 35 - 40C by 10:00 am here on a sunny day, forgot to check on my Sprouts and Cabbage seedlings one day and they dried up a died.

That is operator error and preventable.  :nowink: It's easier to cool down a greenhouse than it is to cool down AND illuminate an airing cupboard!

The space save greenhouse does not come with a vent to fit anything too, so I've taken to walking out and opening the door on sunny days until the sun goes behind the trees and houses about 11:30 and then I go out lunch time to close the door a little, then later again.

I will be removing the foil from the back face now the days are getting longer and brighter.  :nowink:

Sorry if we've already had this conversation ... I forget.

If greenhouse is close enough to house, and you are so inclined, you could get a remote thermometer (wireless etc.) so that something in the house could alert you if the temperature in the greenhouse climbed (or fell!) alarmingly

It erks me when I fail to do something and lose some plants :(  Just found that a mouse?? has eaten the seed-leaves off a whole load of seedlings that germinated a couple of days ago.  That's them for the bin then :(
