Crab apple trees

OH planted 10 crab apple trees in the autumn. They had quite a few crab apples on them which for various reasons I did not use for jelly (will do so this year), and we thought that the birds would eat them. However they have not done so. My questions is - should we now remove the berries which are looking rather withered or should we leave them to fall of naturally.

My neighbor leaves his to fall they have now done so .

We have quite a few wild crab apples round here and what fruit people don't pick or the birds don't eat just drop naturally. Makes no difference to the following year's crop.
