I was too late to get some kiwi whips in last year, but am hoping to do so this year.  Common wisdom (well, my neighbours at least) is that you need a minimum of 4 females for each male (still talking about kiwis.)

From what I read it is also true, 'cos they say a male can fertilise up to 8-10 females, bit like chickens really.

So if space is no problem, Contadino can supply quite a few of us.

The cost was also an issue.  I was a bit short on cash last February and couldn't afford 4 females.  They wanted EUR 20 each for them in the market.  Kiwi plants, that is.

Apparently, they used to cost about EUR 50 each, but the locals just started growing them from seeds from shop-bought fruit.  Anyone got any experience of that?

This year I'm a bit more flush, so can probably afford to buy them, but I'm a thrifty type.

I've never tried as I would have no space for them. But, so I learnt from diff reliable sources that it can happily be grown from seed. (Except the self-fertile one)

You need space for them as you want plenty of seedlings , 'cos you will usually get a lot more male plants than female and you will be wanting them the other way around and they cannot be sexed till a late stage.

Well no harm trying a tray of them and picking 20 of the best for planting out.  That'll be about 1 kiwis worth of seed.  I'll give it a go.  Ta.
